Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and updated code of practice L8 in 2001 states that buildings and company owners are obliged to manage Legionella.

But what is Legionella and why should we take control of it?

Legionella is a bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease that is usually found on air-conditioners and heating systems which might complicate the people’s health on the workplace. Although this disease can be treated by antibiotics, in some cases it poses a great risk to health and may lead to death. The bacteria cannot be transmitted from one person to another but is still considered lethal and dangerous to the human health if not controlled.

Legionnaires’ disease has similar symptoms to other types of pneumonia, which include coughing, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches, and headaches. When one has contracted this disease, he will not experience the symptoms unless he has a weak immune system, smokes, has a chronic lung disease, or is above 50 years old.

This course is aimed at all employers and its staff, especially those people who are exposed to wet and dirty places where legionella can easily reproduce, to give them knowledge in knowing the dangers that Legionella may bring, how to reduce their number, how to mitigate the chances of a person getting sick of it, and how to keep you away from it.
